The experience of photographing ballet recitals, as a parent are in my past now. This painting hails from a time when my daughter Sarah attended ballet, at age 4. She’s now 14,and her focus has shifted to make-up, clothes and boys... I suppose as it should be.
Her creative endeavors have also evolved. She’s turned away from the glitter of the ballet stage. She’s now big into photography and spends a good deal of time posting images to Pintrest, Instagram and occasionally Facebook. We had the opportunity recently, to go on a creative photography expedition through one of our local parks. Our first time going for a walk with the specific intent of shooting photos. It was fun, creative and I think could new way for us to spend quality time together. I’m also encouraging her creativity.
I took photography in college and even worked as a designer/photographer at a start-up magazine for a short time, right after graduation. Photography has changed so much with the advent of digital cameras, but the elements remain the same... lighting, exposure, composition, depth of field, ect. are still the base options. Although now in auto mode, modern cameras make those choices without consult. I still recall much of the classes I took and hope to have her shooting in manual mode eventually. She then have the tool to make those creative choices intentionally. If all else fails... there’s always Photoshop.
Perhaps grandchildren come along one day and I’ll find myself at another recital photo shoot, but I’m in no hurry. That’s something to look forward too.
