The Concept behind Sirens ... |
The problems we face in moving society towards a sustainable future are daunting. What can one person do to affect the massive change so urgently required? In the process of developing my Sirens project, I've come to realize that I am not one voice, but one of millions and millions can't be ignored. We each have a skill set and we must decide for ourselves, how best to apply those skills to the task at hand. The answer for me and my skill set is Sirens. Art, in it's many forms, whether visual, musical or theatrical, is not just a record of our culture, but a driving force. My hope is to employ that force as much as possible, to influence attitudes which can lead to positive change.
In my opinion, the most efficient way to change deep seated attitudes, is through popular culture. My Sirens project is the vehicle I've created for that very purpose. Words and artwork are the tools I have at my disposal, in an attempt to make as much difference as I can. I hope to employ the mass popularity of the magical-realism genre, similar to other such series as The Mortal Instruments, The Twilight Saga and so on. Each of these series have a common thread, a hidden magical world that exists below the surface of our contemporary society. My daughters embrace many of these books and movies with anticipation and relish, perhaps looking for a sense of magic within their own lives. But rather than engaging the reader in all things vampire, I hope to stimulate interest and enthusiasm for our environment. An interest and enthusiasm which already resonates in the hearts of the young adults of today, who realize they are about to inherit this world. My children are ages 17 and 21. Through social media, I've seen first hand from them and their peers, a passion for change and a willingness to embrace the challenge. It's their clear minds that gives me hope for the world. I've chosen to feature the mythological Sirens character for a number of reasons, but their key characteristic is the magic of their voice ... the Sirens song. Rather than portraying them dangerous yet beautiful creatures, who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck and death. I've chosen to to see that view as a misinterpretation of their intent. However I can't disclose my interpretation without spoiling the plot. Stay tuned! |
